Here at Restless.Design, we really champion Irish craft and design.
From furniture to street art, we love it all! In this post we’ve rounded up a few of our favourite wave makers in design from Ireland.
Our small country has produced some iconic designers over the years, especially those who have mastered the art of homeware and craft. Orla Kiely has become a household name thanks to her colourful prints that can be found on anything from teapots to notebooks. Irish born designer, Luke Irwin, produces beautiful handmade rugs. So beautiful in fact that he can name Kate Middleton, Obama and U2 as clients! Though a lot of us may not be able to afford a Luke Irwin rug, shops like Avoca are great for stocking Irish pieces that are more accessible and affordable to the greater public.
One of favourite leading ladies, Eileen Gray, was way ahead of her time and a pioneer of the modern movement of architecture. Famous for her modern furniture such as the Bibendum Club Chair and American Art Moderne Style End Table. Back in 2009, one of her chairs went for €22 million in auction! Philip Treacy is also worthy of mention! In addition to millinery, Treacy was also the design director for the fabulous g Hotel in Galway. To find more Irish furniture and craft online, we recommend Makers & Brothers, an online retailer of everyday design and craft.
Lastly, art. One of favourite artists, Maser, recently hit headlines due to his Repeal Mural and has now become a name known to all. Specialising in typography, street art and murals, Maser delights with his bold colours and eclectic patterns. Another artist we’re currently loving is Andrea Flanagan. As well as a graduate in fine art, Andrea also dabbles in photography, more specifically food photography! Follow her on Instagram @andreaflanaganstudio for some lovely pics!
